Ocean-View Cafes in Chatan

The best thing about cafes in Chatan is the view — the sea. Along the seaside side of Depot Island and the Sunabe seawall, cafes line up with terraces and windows that look straight out at the water. Here is how to enjoy a coffee by the sea, from morning to sunset.

Depot Island seaside cafes

The oceanfront of American Village is where the view cafes cluster. You will find California- style cafe-restaurants with terrace seats facing the horizon, single-origin coffee roasters known for "sunset and coffee," seaside cafes serving homemade-bread breakfasts and acai bowls, and pancake cafes right by the water. Many open early, so you can have breakfast looking at the sea, and several stay open into the evening for the sunset.

Sunabe (Miyagi Coast) cafes

To get away from the crowds and sit quietly by the sea, head north to Sunabe. Cafe-and-dining bars along the seawall are known for the sunset seen from their terraces (terrace seats are often reservation-only). It is also a well-known diving area.
